One of the most common questions couples ask during the planning process is, “How long should our wedding be?” While every celebration is different, I typically recommend planning for 5 to 6 hours for the reception.

In my experience as a wedding DJ, this amount of time gives couples plenty of time to enjoy dinner, special moments, and dancing without making the night feel too long.

Why 5-6 Hours Is the Sweet Spot

For most weddings, 5 to 6 hours is ideal.

Five Hours Works Well If:

  • You’re skipping some formalities.
  • You want a more relaxed timeline.
  • You don’t expect a huge dance crowd.
  • You prefer to keep the energy high from beginning to end.

Six Hours Is Great If:

  • You’re doing all of the traditional reception events.
  • You want extra time for special moments.
  • You’re including activities like the anniversary dance, shoe game, or other interactive elements.
  • You want a little more flexibility in your timeline.

Most couples find that six hours provides enough time to enjoy all the standard reception traditions without feeling rushed.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Many couples assume that a longer reception means a better party. However, that’s not always the case.

In my experience, guests often start leaving once a reception goes beyond six hours. Instead of ending with everyone celebrating together, the evening can gradually fizzle out as guests head home throughout the night.

When planning your timeline, ask yourself:

  • Do you want your wedding to end on a high note?
  • Do you want most of your guests to stay for your send-off?
  • Would you rather have everyone leave saying, “That was an amazing party!” instead of wondering when it’s going to end?

A shorter, well-planned reception often creates a better experience and leaves guests wanting more.

Keep the Dancing Portion Around 2-2.5 Hours

If having a packed dance floor is important to you, I recommend keeping the open dancing portion of the reception to about 2 to 2½ hours.

People naturally get tired, especially after dinner, drinks, and a full day of celebrating. Once open dancing stretches beyond three hours, it’s common to see the dance floor thin out.

Keeping the dance segment a little shorter helps maintain excitement and keeps the energy up until the last song.

Still Want to Celebrate? Have an After Party

Just because your reception ends doesn’t mean the fun has to stop.

If you and your friends want to keep the celebration going, consider hosting an after party. This gives your guests the option to head home while allowing those who want to continue celebrating to do so without extending the reception longer than necessary.

Final Thoughts

So, how long should a wedding be?

For most couples, I recommend:

  • 5 hours if you’re keeping things simple or skipping some formalities.
  • 6 hours if you’re including all the traditional reception events and a few extras.

A well-planned wedding doesn’t have to go late into the night to be memorable. In fact, some of the best receptions are the ones that leave guests wishing the party could have lasted just a little longer.

At iDJ Events, I help couples throughout Austin, San Antonio, and the Texas Hill Country create timelines that flow naturally and keep the energy high from the grand entrance to the final song.
